Getting Started with StudySpell
Getting set up takes about five minutes, and you can try a lot without signing up at all. Here's the whole flow, step by step.
Before you sign up: try the free tools
Want to kick the tires first? You don't need an account for any of these:
- Take the free grade-level spelling assessment to see where your child stands
- Play today's daily word puzzle
- Generate spelling-bee words or print a worksheet
Step 1: Create your free account
When you're ready, create a free account — no credit card required. The free plan includes the full audio spelling test, so your child can start practicing right away.
Step 2: Set up your child
Add your child's name and grade so practice fits their level. On Pro, you can add a profile for each child, and everyone keeps their own progress, streak, and rewards.
Step 3: Add a word list
This is where your child's words come in. Pick whichever way is easiest:
- Type the words in by hand
- Snap a photo of the list — StudySpell reads the words for you
- Upload a Word doc or PDF
- Start from a ready-made list (sight words, days, animals, and more)
Step 4: Start practicing
Open a list and choose how to practice. The audio spelling test reads each word aloud and your child types what they hear, with instant feedback. Prefer a game? Try fill-in-the-blanks or memory match on the same list.
Keep sessions short — a few focused minutes most days beats one long cram. Your child earns XP, builds a streak, and unlocks achievements as they go.
Step 5 (optional): Let your kids practice on their own
Set up your family link, and each child gets a simple PIN to log in and practice independently — no need for you to start every session. Their progress flows straight back to your dashboard.
Step 6 (optional): Set up rewards
Add a reward store with rewards you choose — extra screen time, a treat, picking the movie. Your child earns coins as they practice and trades them for the rewards. It turns "I have to" into "I want to," and you stay in control of what's on offer.
Step 7: Watch the progress
On Pro, the parent dashboard shows progress over time and which words are giving your child the most trouble, so you always know where to focus. Weekly progress emails keep you in the loop without having to check in.
