About the spelling bee simulator

The StudySpell Spelling Bee is a free, no signup bee simulator. A pronouncer reads each word out loud, and your child can ask to hear the definition, the word used in a sentence, or its language of origin, then spell it before the clock runs out, just like a real bee.

Choose a level or let it adapt, pick practice or elimination, and at the end you get a readiness score and a printable certificate. Press start and go.

What is inside the bee

We built the bee into a full competition simulator. Here is what your child gets:

  • Pronouncer audio: every word is read aloud, and your child can hear it again any time.
  • Hear the definition, a sentence, or the origin: tap a button and the pronouncer speaks it out loud, so the spelling is never shown on screen.
  • Four levels plus Adaptive: One Bee, Two Bee, Three Bee, and the Etymology Challenge, or let Adaptive raise the difficulty after two correct in a row and ease off after a miss.
  • A thirty second clock on each word, just enough pressure to feel like the real thing.
  • Two ways to play: Practice runs a set of words and scores them, while Bee Mode keeps going until the first miss.
  • A Bee Readiness score at the end that weights accuracy by the difficulty your child reached.
  • A printable certificate your child can put their name on and print or save as a PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spelling Bee free?

Yes. The bee is completely free with no signup. Free players hear an example sentence whenever the dictionary has one for that word, and Pro members get an example sentence for every word, written to be clear and kid friendly.

Can my child hear the definition and the word in a sentence?

Yes. Tap Definition or Use in a sentence and the pronouncer says it out loud. We speak these instead of printing them so the spelling is never given away, exactly like a real bee. Many words also offer the language of origin.

What is Adaptive difficulty?

Adaptive is the recommended level. It starts in the middle, moves up a tier after two correct words in a row, and steps down a tier after a miss, so the bee keeps meeting your child at the right challenge.

How does the timer work?

Each word has a thirty second countdown that turns red in the final ten seconds. If the clock runs out it counts as a miss, the same as a wrong spelling.

What is the difference between Practice and Bee Mode?

Practice gives your child a set number of words and scores them all, so they can practice without pressure. Bee Mode is elimination: your child keeps spelling until the first miss, just like a real bee round.

What is the Bee Readiness score?

At the end of a round we show a readiness percentage. It combines how many words your child spelled correctly with how hard those words were, so acing easy words reads lower than holding your own on the tougher tiers.

Where do the words come from?

The bee uses real competition words drawn from the Scripps word lists, grouped into levels and by language of origin. They come from official lists and are never auto generated.

What ages is it for?

It works well for roughly grades 1 through 8 and for anyone preparing for a school, regional, or national bee. Start at One Bee for younger spellers, or let Adaptive find the right level.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The bee is free to play with no account. An account is optional, and a Pro membership adds an example sentence for every word along with the rest of StudySpell.
